How to Beat Hay Fever without Drugs
I have suffered from hay fever since I was 7. Apparently our cells regenerate over a 7 year cycle, so you are likely to develop hay fever in a year that is a multiple of 7, strange as that sounds. Ffion and Bronwyn, my daughters seem to have followed this course too.
Over the years I have tried eye drops, tablets, nose sprays, local honey, and any other remedy that I could find, with varying success. When I finally found the tablet that worked best for me, I would find that as the season went on I would become more tired and sleepier, and I am sure that this is as a result of the drugs building up in my system. After all, taking the same drug day in day out for a prolonged period is bound to have a longer lasting effect.
Over the last few years I have tried to live a much healthier life, which you can read more about here is my 2 week detox challenge (https://blackcardbooks.leadpages.co/charlie-reading-2-weeks-detox/ ), avoiding bad foods, but also putting toxins like aluminium and parabens onto and into my body, and so it seemed counter-intuitive to then pump lots of chemicals into my bloodstream in the name of avoiding itchy eyes and sneezing. So I decided to try and beat hay fever without pharmaceutical drugs, and over the last 2 years I think I have cracked it.
I live and work right in the middle of an arable farm, with a nectar mix border that runs directly behind the house and offices. I play golf at Luffenham Heath, renowned at this time of year for its long rough, so I figured that if I could crack it, there is a fair chance it could work for others too. And I think finally this year I have.
The first thing to learn is that with homeopathic remedies, it isn’t about taking a tablet to fix the itchy eyes when it occurs; much better is to build up the resistance over time in the lead up to your hay fever hot spot. This will of course change depending on whether you are allergic to tree pollen (start of the hay fever season), grass pollen (middle of the season) or weed pollen (end of the season).
So what’s the answer, I hear you ask. Firstly, I believe that my hay fever has got better by eating a green and healthy diet. Then, as soon as I get the first sniffles or sneezes, I start to use 3 homeopathic remedies.
1. The first is Pollinosan tablets and I take 2 of these, 2-3 times a day. First thing, after work, and lunchtime if I remember, although more often than not I don’t.
2. Then next I use A Vogel Luffa Nasal Spray
I use this when I have the tablets, but also up to 5 times a day, so if it is a really bad day, I may top up with this when I am stating to feel the itchy eyes coming on. Not needed to make it past 3 goes this year yet though, and I am currently in the eye of the grass pollen storm, my own hot spot.
3. Finally, I then use Hay Max, which is a pure organic pollen balm, a bit like Vaseline, that you apply to the inside of your nose. Only a tiny bit, and not right up inside your nose, so don’t panic, but this traps the pollen and stops it ever getting to you.
Now you might say that I am still taking drugs to beat hay fever, but I am significantly more comfortable putting natural products, albeit it from toothpick weed, up my nose that a drug. Also, so far I have experienced no drowsiness building up as a result of this process.
As one last aside, I have been allergic to spinach and kale for as long as I was willing to eat them. They made my lips swell up, and my throat start to close. This has led to some slightly worrying moments over the years. I found out a couple of years ago that this is the same allergy that is causing my hay fever. Recently I have had the opportunity to eat lovely dishes, some cooked by the Pink Figs (https://www.facebook.com/pinkfigs/) that contained both, and what I have found is that I am now having no reaction to them. I’ve not tested this fully yet, so don’t take my word for it, but it does seems to be working for that too. Whether the same will apply in the winter, who knows, but watch this space and I’ll let you know.
