Episode 67: Morgan Pearson is an American professional triathlete who is really going places - after having a disappointing individual race, he went on to win a silver medal in the mixed relay event at the Tokyo Olympics. He comes from a swimming and running background, so he has had to work hard to master the cycling element of triathlon, but has achieved a lot in a short time, including his recent lightning-quick half marathon times. He is certainly an athlete to watch in the coming years.
Claire and I wanted to chat to him about how he has improved his cycling so quickly, how he dealt with the loss of his brother in the lead up to the Olympics, his DNF at Challenge Daytona and the highs and lows of an event which saw him walk away with a silver medal.
What I’ve Been Reading
When Meb Keflezighi - the first person in history to win both the Boston and New York City marathons as well as an Olympic marathon medal - ran his final marathon in New York City on November 5, 2017, it marked the end of an extraordinary distance-running career. What I’ve Been Watching
Shane Warne was widely considered as one of the greatest bowlers in cricket history, and in 2000 he was selected by a panel of cricket experts as one of five Wisden Cricketers of the Century, the only specialist bowler and the only one still playing at the time. This was a long time he went on to become the second highest test wicket taker of all time. His attitude and antics off the pitch often attracted as much attention as his on-pitch success, but you always got the impression he would be a ‘helluva fella to ‘ave a few frothies with’! Taken from us at far to early an age, the documentary Shane is the definitive story of him, and really worth watching if you enjoy your cricket. As he said, “I drank a bit, I smoked a bit, and I bowled leg spin!”
App I’ve Found Useful
We were in the beautiful and historic city of Ghent, Belgium at half term for a minor medical procedure for one of my daughters. We had a few hours to kill in Brussels on the way back and wanted to explore, but had all our luggage with us, and the luggage storage at the station was full. Ever the optimistic that technology can solve the problem, I hit the App Store and found Nannybag. Slightly dubious about leaving a treasured luggage with a random stranger in a shop, the app reassured me with ratings and procedures, and it worked brilliantly. We left our luggage for a small price with a local store and collected it when it was time to travel home. Finance Theme I’ve Been Considering
From April 2022, HMRC are changing their reporting requirement for trusts. Previously, only trusts with a tax event required registration, however, the new rules require more types of trusts to be registered online using the new HMRC Trust Registration Service (TRS). All named trustees are equally legally responsible for the trust, but you must nominate one person to act as ‘Lead trustee’ for trust registration. The person nominated as Lead trustee will be the point of contact for HMRC. Registration is the responsibility of the Lead trustee and is carried out yourself via HMRC’s TRS. There will be a requirement to keep the information updated annually. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it isn’t an easy read, but you do not need to register any trusts that we have set up through Solidus or The Will Company unless we contact you directly. If you have an investment which is written into trust, we strongly suggest that you complete your own investigations or contact us to determine if your trust needs to be registered.
