Death, extinction and achieving the impossible
In this week’s Friday Footnotes there is everything from death and extinction, to an inspiring young lady and ways to improve your physical and mental wellbeing. Hopefully this will stand you in good stead whilst being grounded for a month.

Episode 10: Wanting to stay away from chemistry experiment-like energy gels, I was keen to chat to Warren Pole, one of the founders of 33fuel.com, about the science behind the success of their high quality, superfood based endurance fuels.

TED Talk I’ve Found Interesting
Laura Penhaul, an Olympic and Paralympic physio, decided that, having never rowed before, she wanted to organise and crew the first 4 person unsupported Pacific row. You can watch the inspiring (for me as well as Ffion and Bronwyn) documentary Losing Sight of Shore, but her TED talk ‘The strength of adaptability: achieving the impossible’ is also really worth watching. Laura talks about how to achieve what may at first seem impossible, drawing on her own experiences and supporting others to adapt to achieve incredible challenges.
What I’ve Been Reading
Upon reading an earlier Friday Footnote (FFN) email, a client of ours suggested that I read the book ’33 Meditations on Death: Notes from the Wrong End of Medicine’ (thanks Bryan). Not immediately drawn in by the title, I took his word for it, and dived in anyway. I can honestly say this should be a must read for everyone. It has made me see death, and how we approach it in a whole new light. If you want to ensure you are treated the way you want to be when the time comes, I encourage you to read this brilliant book. Please do share any great books that you’ve read with me, as I am always looking for inspiration!

What I’ve Been Watching
You may have already seen this, but if you haven’t I can honestly say ‘Extinction: The Facts’ on BBC iPlayer should be a compulsory watch for every responsible adult. With a million species at risk of extinction, Sir David Attenborough explores how this crisis of biodiversity has consequences for us all, threatening food and water security, undermining our ability to control our climate and even putting us at greater risk of pandemic diseases. As a family, it made us re-evaluate so much, so I encourage you to give it the time it and the planet deserve.
App I’ve Found Useful
During lockdown part 1, I mentioned the power of journaling. It is rare that a sequel is better than the original, so lockdown the sequel in the dark winter months could lead to some darker moments too.
I was recently introduced to the App ‘The 5 Minute Journal’ and can say I love it. It simplifies the journaling process, gives me one easy place to keep it all, saves me forgetting, allows me to make it visual with my own photos, and gives me an inspiring quote to start the day with. In fact, the quote below was the first thing I read this morning. Start the day in the best possible mindset with this simple App’s help!
Quote of the Week
“Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame, but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.” - Martin Luther King Jr.
Finance Theme I’ve Been Considering
I am conscious this FFN is longer than usual, so let’s keep this part short and sweet. Once you’ve read ‘33 Meditations on Death’ drop us a line when you want us to organise a Lasting Power of Attorney, so that in your demise, what you want to happen actually does. Some of the stories otherwise are frightening.
