MND, the Planet and goals
TRIBEathlon Podcast
Episode 20: Occasionally you meet someone that changes your perspective forever. Sam Perkins was as passionate about triathlon as he is about Nottingham Forest, then he received the earth-shattering diagnosis that he had Motor Neurone Disease (MND), an incurable and terminal disease. I got the opportunity to chat Sam, who is nothing short of inspiring, about how his love of triathlon is helping him cope, and how the sport is allowing him to raise money to raise awareness and help fund research to fight this awful disease.
What I’ve Been Reading
I’ve this week finished reading ‘Iron War: Two Incredible Athletes. One Epic Rivalry. The Greatest Race of All Time’ by Matt Fitzgerald. It tells the story of the battle of Dave Scott and Mark Allen at the 13th Hawaii Ironman in 1989 which stands as one of the most dramatic stories in the history of athletics. The two greatest athletes of triathlon's pioneering generation raced side by side, literally, for eight straight hours at breakneck speed over the 140.6-miles. The storytelling is brilliant, but it also is laced with great advice and insights into the minds of these incredible athletes.
What I’ve Been Watching
As a farmer’s son, I understand a fair bit about the difficulty of balancing the planet’s wellbeing with human food production. I try to take a balanced view and apply that same balanced view to my diet, which includes restricting the amount of meat I consume. Watching ‘Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret’ this week opened my eyes to what’s happening on a global scale, as it looks at how factory farming is decimating the planet's natural resources. Worth watching so you can make your own judgement.
Quote of the Week
“I craft my dreams into ambitions, refine my ambitions into goals, and turn my goals into my plans.”
- Michael Johnson.
Finance Theme I’ve Been Considering
I’ve been considering the above quote by Michael Johnson, as at this time of the year I am trying to refine my goals for the next. Last week, The Leadership Team and I had our annual 2-day meeting refining our business goals for the year ahead, and yesterday I was refining my personal goals.
In my business life I split work into 4 roles: business manager, entrepreneur, financial planner and marketeer. In my personal life: husband, father, wellbeing and financial. By splitting your life into different roles, you can build better goals, as it ensures you have objectives in each of the most important areas of your life. So, what are your financial goals for 2021? It’s time to start thinking about them now. A year from now, you’ll wish you started today!
