Resilience Project, Digital Humans and No Fault Divorce
TRIBEathlon Podcast
Episode 72: Jan Sibbersen broke the Kona swim record in 2018, recording an incredible 46.29 at age 43, many years after being first out of the water at his first race there. With German national swim team experience, he embraced triathlon initially in the off season, but it soon became his passion.
After multiple Kona appearances, he went on to manage a young promising Ironman athlete by the name of Patrick Lange! He also decided to step away from the corporate investment banking world at set up his own wetsuit brand, Sailfish, which now sponsors many top athletes from around the world.
Claire and I wanted to chat to Jan about 'the energy of leading the race', how to choose the right wetsuit and how triathletes can improve their swim race times.
What I’ve Been Reading
From the moment I started reading The Resilience Project: Finding Happiness through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness, I was hooked. Hugh van Cuylenburg was a cricket mad Aussie teacher with a passion for helping teenage girls battle mental illnesses after his own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia. With his talent for incredible storytelling, he has gone on to become one of the most respected speakers to both schools and professional sports teams. This book has both brilliant stories and takeaways to create a happier life. A highly recommended read for all, especially parents!
App I’ve Found Useful
In tandem with the above book recommendation is The Resilience Project App. Essentially a daily journal that helps you focus on the essence of the book: gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. Simple and taking less than 5 minutes a day, it is a brilliant tool when combined with the book to take you to a happier place!
What I’ve Been Watching
When Alex Honnold, star of previous recommendation Free Solo, says “the things he's climbing boggle my mind” it’s worth investigating who he’s talking about. Marc-André Leclerc climbs alone, far from the limelight; on remote alpine faces, the free-spirited 23-year-old Canadian makes some of the boldest solo ascents in history in The Alpinist. A moving an incredible documentary that is a must watch if you liked Free Solo.
TED Talk I’ve Found Interesting
In his astonishing talk and tech demo Digital humans that look just like us, software researcher Doug Roble debuts "DigiDoug": a real-time, 3D, digital rendering of his likeness that's accurate down to the scale of pores and wrinkles. Powered by an inertial motion capture suit, deep neural networks and enormous amounts of data, DigiDoug renders the real Doug's emotions (and even how his blood flows and eyelashes move) in striking detail. Learn more about how this exciting tech was built - and its potential applications in movies, virtual assistants and beyond.

Finance Theme I’ve Been Considering
No fault divorces were written into law from April this year, potentially making the process of a married couple parting ways quicker and easier, with less animosity. The change replaces the ‘five grounds’ allowing couples to divorce without assigning fault. It also introduces the option for joint applications, lowering the possibility of a divorce being contested. Whilst the parting of ways might be amicable it would be wise not to assume relations would always continue to be.
It is best to plan for the future from the outset rather than risk having to do so under a fresh set of circumstances and feelings. If the couple have children, they should consider their obligations to them both now and in later life. Involving a financial adviser early on in divorce proceedings would be a prudent move especially as Lifetime Cashflow Forecasting can help all parties understand what their new future holds.
Divorce is rarely pretty, but perhaps the new ‘no fault’ legislation might lower the turbulence and allow for some more grown-up separations in the future. If you or someone you know ever needs the help of a divorce specialising financial planner, just let us know.
