Episode 58: Mark Bryant is a terminal cancer survivor who uses his healing journey to help inspire, educate and empower cancer patients on their own paths to recovery.
Since his terminal diagnosis 6 years ago, when he claimed on his own life insurance, Mark has been on an incredible journey of learning, recovery and, more recently, endurance sport when he completed a 1/2 Ironman distance triathlon that involved running up Snowdon.
I wanted to chat to Mark about how nutrition, understanding emotions and spirituality has helped him go from Terminal to Triathlon , and how he plans to continue this journey with a full Ironman in 2022.
What I’ve Been Watching
When Roger Bannister ran the first 4-minute mile, it completely changed the mindset of other athletes around the world and, despite previously being considered impossible, in the subsequent years many people followed suit. In recent years, the sub-2 hour marathon has become as iconic…imagine running 1 mile in 4 minutes 35 seconds, let alone 26.2 of them! I know I couldn’t manage 1 mile at that pace.
KIPCHOGE: THE LAST MILESTONE is a cinematic portrait of world record marathon holder, Eliud Kipchoge, as he prepares to break one of the last milestones in sporting history: the sub-two hour marathon. Or to put it another way, he ran 100 metres in 17.2 seconds – 422 times; just astonishing. If you love running, or sporting history, this is definitely worth a watch, as it is brilliant on so many levels.

When Facebook announced their name change to Meta, there was a lot of talk about it being a distraction tactic to move attention away from their bad press, but it raised an interesting question: “what is the ‘metaverse’?”. An article that a friend sent to me, written by his CEO, brilliantly explained the potential of the metaverse, whilst simultaneously raising some of the concerns surrounding it. TED Talk I’ve Found Interesting
Netflix changed the world of entertainment -- first with DVD-by-mail, then with streaming media and then again with sensational original shows like "Orange Is the New Black" and "Stranger Things" -- but not without taking its fair share of risks.
In conversation with TED curator, Chris Anderson, Netflix co-founder and CEO, Reed Hastings, discusses the company's bold internal culture, the powerful algorithm that fuels their recommendations, the $8 billion worth of content they're investing in this year and his philanthropic pursuits supporting innovative education, among much more. What it made me realise is that so many sectors will follow this path, financial services included. If you aren’t part of the tech evolution like Netflix, you might just become the next Blockbuster video!

Finance Theme of the Week
It is always brilliant to see a new local business that sparks your interest and enthusiasm, and occasionally you can support it beyond becoming a customer. I recently heard about Rutland Kino; our very own boutique cinema that is coming to Oakham High Street in the spot currently known as Victoria Hall. It will be a modern 2 screen cinema with good food and drinks, comfy seating and the best cinema design. It won’t just feature great films, but live sporting events and also provide a venue for community groups.
They are reaching the end of raising the funds required to begin work, and they hope to be up and running by the end of 2022. If you are a fellow Rutlander, and it is of interest, you can invest in it and own a share of the business. It is classed as a high-risk investment that is designed to generate income more than a capital exit, although an exit might be possible after year 5, so this is in no way a recommendation to invest, but as it is classed as an Enterprise Investment Scheme, it can be tax efficient for Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax.
